Welcome to Open House!

Happy Thursday, and a good morning to all! Welcome to parents and kids from 4St who are reading this post. It is such a pleasure to have a chance to think and talk about one of the most important – and beloved – skills we try to build in school: reading! It is important to learn how to think while we read, and this is a life-long goal for any reader to develop. This morning, I invite students and parents alike to post a comment  below about what reading means to them. What is reading good for? Why do we read? You can also just post a comment about what you are reading now, or a thought about a favorite reading experience you've had.

At the start of the year, the children will probably remember that we had a discussion about this as we learned about working together in Reading Workshop. Many students said that we read simply because it is fun. Others noted that it can build vocabulary, is a way to learn, and can help us become better writers.

It will be interesting to hear if there are any new ideas, or if some of the same ones come up in today's comments. Keep in mind that new comments will not post right away, but we look forward to reading through your ideas from today and putting them up on this page for all to read very soon. So, share your ideas about reading below by clicking on the "comment" link below. Thanks for reading!

Dear Mr.S,

I read for fun and because it helps me learn.
In non-fiction books I can swallow the text and for fiction I can live in an adventure.

Andrea

Dear bloggers,
I have an important question for you. It came from a favorite book called "Haroun and the Sea of Stories" that Lisa and I read over and over. We really enjoyed it, but we had a lot of trouble with the question. Here it is:

What's the good of a story that isn't even true?

What kind of person do you think asked it?

I look forward to reading your thoughts about this.

Reading to me is an escape into adventure as well as a time to relax A good book, to me, is a book I can't put down. Books with drama as well as humor are my favorite. Keep Reading! Mom (Jemellle)

I just read a book called The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It was about a poor African American woman who died from cancer in 1951. Her cancer cells were taken for medical research (without her consent), and have been used in many discoveries over the years.

I liked this book because it connected lots of threads that are affecting our lives today - healthcare, ethics, family, racial issues, poverty, education. Also, when you buy the book, part of the money goes to a scholarship fund for Henrietta's family!

I read stories to fire my imagination. Reading stories transports me to places and times that are beyond my own little life here in Brookline. Reading lets me meet new people and situations. It is a whole other world that enriches my life. I do all of this reading in books.

I read non-fiction to learn how to do things and find out new information. I do most of this kind of reading on the web because the information is more current. Reading non-fiction helps me to find out things like a good way to fix my car and the history of Himeji Castle.

I love to read!

Dear Mr. S.
I love to read - books, news, and scientific papers. Reading makes me learn about the world and about other people's life, open doors and generate tolerance. I just read Eve Ensler's book: I am an emotional creature.

Dear Mr.S++++,
One of the things that Benja and I agree is great about reading are the stories. We like that that can be about anything and take you to experiences and places you have never been. We like that you get to think up the details -- the story is like a head start but you use your imagination to decide what the characters, places and action looks like. When we see a movie after read the book, we almost always like the book better.
What do you think?

Dear Reflective Readers (of al ages) from 4St-

I have so much enjoyed the thinking each of your posted comments has encouraged me to do. I hope you enjoy reading these provocative and interesting from our community of readers! It was thrilling to hear the ways reading teaches you, makes you ask important (and sometimes beautifully quirky) questions, and opens doors in your critical and "imaginical" minds. The benefits and rewards of this life-long source of so much that's valuable – namely the act of reading – are clearly expressed in the comments form this morning!

I am posting my own comment, here as a quick little way to share my appreciation for your attendance today and also your participation in our "blogging" lessons. In fact, there are many ideas you've shared that will contribute to our next session of reading and thinking through our blogs.

Thank you all again for sharing your love for– and thoughts about – reading
Sincerely,
Mr. S.
